Along the Bras d' Or Lakes NEW!
Our Bras d’Or Lakes Scenic Excursion will circle this world famous "lake" utilizing as many shoreline roads as possible, thus offering you an ever-changing panorama of woodlands, farms and villages. Some may wish to briefly experience walking, and bird-watching. The region is a major nesting area for bald eagles, and these impressive birds can often be seen soaring aloft or perched on shoreline trees.
Bras d'Or is known for gentle, fog-free waters, beautiful anchorages and hundred of coves and islands. It is an international cruising destination that attracts hundreds of boating enthusiasts every year. Its unique tidal waters create a rich ecosystem that supports a dazzling array of wildlife. Hundreds of pairs of bald eagles nest along the lake shore and in the surrounding countryside. White-tailed deer, osprey, foxes, and raccoons are also frequently seen.
Our first stop will be to experience the daily life of the early Scottish settlers at the Nova Scotia Highland Village Museum. Moving along you'll be visiting Nova Scotia's oldest railway station, the Orangedale Railway (circa 19th century) Museum which features old railway cars, the Station Master's Quarters plus numerous other historical railway artifacts on display.
As we tour, we'll pass by or through the community of Marble Mountain with its unique beach covered with "marble chip" sand. We’ll also pass Chapel Island which is a Mik'maq sacred site and is where they converted to Christianity more than 400 years ago. Next, we’re off to visit the area of Saint Peters and briefly explore the National Historic Site, the 140 year old Saint Peters Canal; the man-made entrance to the Bras d'Or from the Atlantic Ocean.
Afterwards, we’ll briefly tour Isle Madame, an ancient Acadian Community. Early settlers fled here after the 1755 Expulsion of the Acadians.
Utilizing route number four which skirts along the southern coastline of the Bras d'Or, we’ll stop by for a visit to the Tearoom of international renowned singer/songwriter, Rita McNeil, before returning to your cruise ship at Sydney.
As with all our excursions, you will be given multiple opportunities for photos, rest stops, snacks and so forth.
